Honolulu Marathon – The Dream Trip

Pre-registration is now open for this winter’s big adventure! Experience three iconic destinations in one trip: San Francisco, Honolulu and Los Angeles.

    San Francisco

We start our journey in charming San Francisco – the city of steep hills, unique blend of Victorian elegance and modern architecture, and stunning Pacific Ocean location. Classic sights such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, the cable cars, the Transamerica Pyramid, Coit Tower and Chinatown await you.

San Francisco offers a rich variety of restaurants, culture and shopping and is considered by many to be the most charming city in the USA.

City tour with visit to Muir Woods included.

    Honolulu

The journey continues to tropical Oahu, Hawaii’s most famous island and home to the bustling capital Honolulu. Here you’ll find world-famous Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana – one of the world’s largest shopping centres, and the International Market Place, perfect for those who want to experience the local market pulse.

A visit to Pearl Harbor is highly recommended – a historic site that provides a powerful insight into the events that changed world history.

Excursions in Honolulu can be booked as an option.

    Honolulu Marathon 13 December

Imagine standing on the start line at sunrise, surrounded by palm trees, sea breezes and the scent of tropical flowers. Ahead of you lies 42.195 kilometres of pure running pleasure – along golden beaches, through swaying palm trees and past majestic volcanoes. This is the Honolulu Marathon – one of the most spectacular and atmospheric races in the world! The race attracts around 20 000 runners and is the 4th largest marathon in the USA.

Unlike many other marathons, there is no maximum time – here you run, jog or walk at your own pace. This makes the Honolulu Marathon the perfect race for both beginners and experienced runners who want to combine training, adventure and a holiday in one of the world’s most beautiful places.

The start is early in the morning in the centre of Honolulu, when the city is still bathed in dawn light. The course winds along Waikiki Beach, up the Diamond Head crater and along the ocean with an ever-present view of the turquoise Pacific. The crowd cheers, music plays and the atmosphere is something you’ll never forget.

After the finish, a medal, tropical fruits, palm trees and maybe a swim in the sea await you – you’ve earned it!

The Honolulu Marathon is more than a race – it’s an experience of a lifetime. A chance to run in paradise, feel the community and create memories that last forever.

    Los Angeles

We end our journey in vibrant Los Angeles – the city where the sun always shines and dreams come true. Here you can enjoy a morning run along Venice Beach, celebrity spotting in Beverly Hills, shopping in Santa Monica and an unforgettable film experience in Hollywood and at Universal Studios.

Los Angeles is the centre of film, music and popular culture and offers the perfect ending to this unique journey.

City tour including entrance to Universal Studios included.

    About the race

This race is a loop along the southeast coast of Oahu, partly with a great sea view. The course is flat and easy but a bit hilly towards the end.

There are around 30,000 runners taking part, most of them Japanese. The race starts as early as 05.00 in the morning in the balmy, pitch black and tropical morning. You know when the race has started when the sky is suddenly lit up by a colourful firework display! It’s great to run, but it’s not very fast. One of the reasons is that a large number of your fellow competitors are Japanese and they are not here to run fast but to finish. Accessibility is poor to begin with. So don’t expect a great time or a new personal best. But the heat, feared by many, is not particularly difficult. The sun doesn’t rise until around seven o’clock and it rarely gets warmer than about 25 degrees.

There are 16 hydration stations along the course, the first after 3.5 km. Water and sports drinks are served.

Start to the Park 10 km
New race for this year replacing the “Mayors walk”. 10 km race with timing. The race starts at the same time as the Marathon and runs the first 10 km of the marathon course. Finish in Pakiolani Park (same finish as Marathon).

    Expo:
Convention Center, 1801 Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki near the large Ala Moana shopping centre.

    Distances: Marathon and 10 km
    Number of participants: 20 000
    Start time: 05.00
    Maximum time: None
    Medal/T-shirt: Yes/Yes
    Timing with chip: Yes
    Pasta party: Yes
Character of the race: Hilly turnaround course.

The trip is organised in cooperation with Marathon Tours & Travel, USA. The trip usually includes runners from about 20 countries, so it is a very international experience. All tour management, guiding and lectures are in English.

Marathon Tours & Travel has been offering the Antarctica Marathon®️ & Half-Marathon since its inception in 1995 and the event is very professional and well organised.

The journey to Antarctica starts with three nights in Buenos Aires, where you will have the opportunity to meet other participants, discover the vibrant city and attend the mandatory race briefing and a joint welcome dinner. We then fly to Ushuaia, at the southernmost tip of Argentina. From there, your journey to Antarctica begins on board the Ocean Victory. Over several days, you’ll sail through the Beagle Channel, across Drake Strait, through the Shetland Islands and on to King George Island – where the races take place.

During the voyage, you will explore one of the most pristine places on the planet, and encounter the splendour of Antarctica in the form of glaciers, icebergs, penguins, seals and whales. On board the ship, you’ll hear lectures from historians and scientists, and take part in landings to visit seal colonies, penguin colonies, research stations and more.

The race on King George Island runs on marked dirt roads connecting research bases from Uruguay, Chile, China and Russia. Great care is taken not to leave any environmental footprint in this sensitive ecosystem. For this reason, a maximum of 100 people are allowed to stay on land at the same time during the event. Marathon Tours & Travel takes its responsibility very seriously and has so far raised over $600,000 for Oceanites – a non-profit research organisation that monitors the effects of climate change and the impact of tourism on Antarctica.

    About the race

Start times: Two start groups (approximately 07:00 and 12:30)

Course: The race will start and probably finish about 200 metres from Bellingshausen, the Russian base. The final course will be measured and prepared the day before the race. Activities at the bases, road conditions and/or weather may affect the course.

The aim is to include all four bases in the area – China, Chile, Russia and Uruguay – allowing for a three-lap course for the marathon. The course runs entirely on dirt roads, which can often be muddy. The exact course changes every year depending on base operations, weather and road conditions.

All runners must be self-sufficient and cannot count on access to indoor facilities during the race.

    Environmental commitment:

The track on King George Island connects the research stations from Uruguay, Chile, China and Russia via marked dirt roads. Great care is taken not to leave any environmental footprint on this sensitive ecosystem.

For this reason, a maximum of 100 people are allowed ashore at any one time during the event.
Marathon Tours & Travel takes its responsibility very seriously and has raised over $600,000 to date for Oceanites – a non-profit scientific organisation that monitors the impact of climate change and tourism on Antarctica.

    Charitable purposes:

Every year Marathon Tours & Travel offers runners the opportunity to sponsor an official Antarctica kilometre mark Marathon®️ or Half Marathon. All proceeds go to Oceanites.

As a thank you, the sponsor gets to keep their personalised kilometre marker after the race – a unique souvenir!
For over 30 years, Oceanites has been researching the impact of climate change and tourism on Antarctica, and collecting important data on wildlife.

In addition, a charity auction will be held on board during the voyage with all proceeds going to Oceanites.

    Temperature:

The average temperature during the race is -9°C to +1°C, but wind chill can lower the experience by another 5-10°C. Heavy snowfall is rare, but light snow showers are common.

    Maximum times for the course:

    • Marathon: Max 6 hours and 30 minutes
      • You must have passed the half marathon within 3 hours and 10 minutes
    • Half marathon: Max 4 hours and 30 minutes

Officials have the right to remove participants from the race if fatigue, hypothermia or dehydration is considered a danger.

    Number plate & check-in:

Check-in and mandatory race briefing takes place at the welcome dinner in Buenos Aires. The briefing focuses in particular on environmental rules for the event.

    Shoes:

You do not need any special shoes. Trail running shoes are recommended, preferably water-resistant.
Bring two pairs of shoes as it can be wet and muddy.
Lightweight racing flats are not recommended.

NOTE! Walking sticks or other aids are not allowed in any of the races.

    Age limits:

    • All marathon participants must be 18 years of age or older on race day.
    • No age limit applies for the half marathon.

    Prizes & Awards:

    • The top three women and men in both races are recognised.
    • In the marathon, the top two in each age category are recognised:
      • Under 40 years
      • 40-49 years
      • 50-59 years
      • 60-69 years
      • 70 years and older
    • Everyone who completes the race receives a finisher certificate and medal.

    Difficulty level:

    Very challenging.

Entry fee: SEK 2500 regardless of distance.

    Good to know

Antarctica Marathon – Packing list and good to know

    Please note:

All guests are allowed to take only one (1) piece of hand luggage of maximum 8kg and one (1) piece of checked-in luggage of maximum 22kg on the chartered flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia.

As it is summer weather in Buenos Aires, the clothes used in Buenos Aires can be left in a bag at the hotel when we return to the same hotel.

    AVERAGE TEMPERATURES (MARCH)

    • Ushuaia, Argentina: 7-16 °C
    • Antarctica: -8 to +2 °C

    CLOTHING CODE

    • Clothing throughout the journey is casual and comfortable.
      • More festive occasions: We recommend dressing up for the welcome dinner in Buenos Aires and for the closing cocktail (smart casual/business casual).
      • TIP: Keep a warm and waterproof jacket handy in Ushuaia – temperatures are significantly lower than in Buenos Aires.
    • The stock-on-stock principle:
    1. Base layer: Wicks away moisture and keeps the body warm
    2. Midlayer: Insulates and preserves body heat
    3. Outer layer: Protects against water and wind while remaining breathable
      • TIP: No need to bring a winter jacket – a parka is provided on board!

    CLOTHING

    Provided on board:

    • Insulated parka with waterproof outer – yours to keep
    • Sturdy rubber boots – to borrow during the cruise (ideal for landings).

Please note: You do not need to bring a winter jacket. The parka that everyone receives is excellent. For all landings, you must use the boots provided by the ship, which means that your own boots or winter shoes are not needed.

    We recommend that you pack:

    Bearings – Upper body

    • Moisture wicking base layer
    • Medium-weight insulating fleece layer and/or down jacket
    • Waterproof shell/outer layer with hood

    Stock – Lower body

    • Thermal trousers/base layers

    • Outer gloves or mittens (large enough to wear finger mittens underneath)
    • Moisture wicking sock layer
    • Outer socks (e.g. wool)
      • Special running socks for race day
    • Thermal cap
    • Scarf / buff / balaclava / face mask

    SHOES

    • Off-road/trail running shoes (race only)
      • Waterproof or water-repellent
    • Running shoes (if conditions for the race are dry which is unlikely)
    • Studs (unless your shoes have studs).

NOTE: Only proper shoes may be worn on board the ship. No sandals.

    OTHER

    • Eye protection
      • Sunglasses with high UV protection
      • Running glasses (especially if you wear lenses)
    • Sun cream and lip balm with SPF
    • Life jacket or water belt for the race

    • Waterproof backpack for excursions
    • Backpack (30L recommended for race day) for camera, mobile phone etc.
    • Binoculars
    • Camera, extra batteries and memory cards

    TRAVEL ADAPTER & ELECTRICITY

    • Argentina:

    • Ocean Victory:
      • Type F sockets in public areas
      • International A-13 sockets in cabins and bathrooms (compatible with most plugs)

    SEAJUKA

    • Bring seasickness medication (plasters, tablets, etc.) as advised by a doctor.
    • The ship sells a limited amount of seasickness tablets – we recommend that you bring your own.

    DOCUMENTS & MEANS OF PAYMENT

    • Valid passport
    • Credit card
    • Cash (USD) – Recommended in small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) for taxis etc.
      • NOTE: Tips for the expedition team are paid in cash. Recommended level: $15/day, i.e. $150 for 10 days.

    INTERNET AND TELEPHONE

    • It is expensive to call from Buenos Aires and also from the ship (if possible). It is best to try to call when you have wifi at the hotel in Buenos Aires.
    • The ship offers internet packages that are relatively expensive and work very unevenly. Having the ambition to work where internet connection is required will create irritation. It is therefore best to leave work at home.

Above is our recommended packing list. Of course, customise according to your personal needs and preferences.

    About the race

    Date: Sunday 30 August 2026

The TCS Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS, is the newest member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors! With an expected 35,000 runners participating in the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major, runners from all over the world are welcomed to Sydney.

The marathon will not only be the largest ever organised in Australia, but also the headline event of an entire running festival. The festival will bring together over 40,000 participants from more than 100 countries, making it the largest event of its kind in Australia. The festival consists of four different races: the TCS Sydney Marathon, the TCS Sydney Marathon 10km, the TCS Sydney Mini Marathon and the TCS Sydney Marathon Elite Wheelchair Race.

As the organisers also offer the 4.2 km and 10 km distances, there is the possibility to run even for those who think a marathon is too long.

    Course:

The marathon course was introduced in 2001 and originally followed the same route as the marathon at the 2000 Summer Olympics. The 2025 course will include changes to improve the experience and make it ‘faster, more scenic and spectator-friendly’. The Sydney Marathon course is AIMS certified as an accurate measurement. The marathon map and course profile can be found here:

Number of participants: about 35 000
    Start time: 06.31/07.03/07.41
    Maximum time: 6 h 30 min
    Medal/T-shirt: Yes/Yes
    Timing with chip: Yes
    Pasta party: No
Character of the race: Very fast and central course with many sights during the race
    Entry fee: 895 EUR
Last day to register: Subject to availability

    Abbott World Marathon Majors

Do you dream of running among the world’s top marathon cities and joining an exclusive group of runners? Then the Abbott World Marathon Majors is your ultimate challenge – a journey that takes you across six iconic cities, six unforgettable races and a destination that symbolises pure running joy and determination.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors consist of six of the world’s most prestigious marathons: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. Together they form the ultimate marathon journey – a chance to experience new cultures, atmospheres and courses, while challenging both body and mind.

Each race you complete earns you a star on your way to the coveted Six Star Medal, proof that you have completed all six. The journey requires careful planning, perseverance and passion – but each goal you cross becomes a memory for life.

Beyond the races, you also become part of a global community of runners through the World Marathon Majors system, with rankings, virtual challenges and the opportunity to track your progress against the world’s best in your class.

When you run your last of the six races and receive your Six Star Medal, it’s more than a race you’re finishing – it’s a journey you’ve conquered.

The TCS Sydney Marathon has officially become the seventh member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors from 2025. The race has undergone a multi-year evaluation process in which the organisation, safety, spectator support and participation numbers have been improved to meet the high standards required to become a Major. The course takes runners through the city’s most iconic settings, including running across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finishing at the world-famous Opera House.

Looking ahead, further expansion of the series is planned. Two marathons are currently in the candidate phase: the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in South Africa and the Shanghai Marathon in China. If the races fulfil all the criteria, they are expected to become official Majors in 2027.

With these additions, the Abbott World Marathon Majors could comprise a total of nine races, and there has already been discussion about the possibility of introducing a new Nine-Star Medal for those runners who complete all the marathons in the expanded series.
