EDP Lisbon Marathon
If you’re looking to run a fast, international marathon, Lisbon is a great choice. Lisbon is a picturesque city with a rich history, great food, a seaside setting and a vibrant culture – ideal for both sightseeing and relaxation.
What’s more, you’ve got the whole summer to train for the race!
Lisbon is a city that glistens in the sunshine, with pastel-coloured houses climbing up seven hills towards the River Tagus. Here, historic alleyways meet modern cafés, and the scent of fresh pastries mingles with the sound of fado drifting through the evening air. The city offers magnificent views, a sea breeze and a vibrant cultural scene – a place where every stroll feels like a journey of discovery.
This year, for the first time, we’re travelling with a group to run the EDP Lisbon Marathon. Join us and run yourself, or come along and be one of the many supporters cheering on the runners along the route.
We always have experienced guides with us throughout the trip to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Travel facts
Lisbon is the city that captures your heart
Lisbon is a city that captivates with its unique blend of history, culture and modern vibrancy. With its sunny coastal location on the Atlantic, the Portuguese capital offers a warm climate, friendly people and an atmosphere that keeps many visitors coming back time and time again.

The soul of the city lies in its picturesque neighbourhoods: Alfama, where cobbled streets wind their way between whitewashed houses and the aroma of grilled fish wafts from small tavernas; Bairro Alto, with its lively nightlife and cosy bars; and Belém, home to some of Lisbon’s most iconic monuments, such as the Tower of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
No visit to Lisbon is complete without a ride on the yellow No. 28 tram, which takes you up steep hills and through charming neighbourhoods overlooking the River Tagus. From the city’s many miradouros (viewpoints), you can enjoy panoramic views of red rooftops, winding streets and sparkling water.
Lisbon is also a city for those who enjoy the finer things in life. Here, the melancholic strains of fado await you in small restaurants, pastéis de nata in traditional patisseries, and a cuisine that combines the delicacies of the sea with hearty, rustic flavours.
For those who want to explore further, gems such as Sintra, with its fairytale palaces, and the seaside resorts of Cascais and Estoril are just a short journey away.
In short, Lisbon is a city that has it all – history, culture, gastronomy and joy – all set against a backdrop of sunshine and sea breezes.
About the race
The Lisbon Marathon is a scenic and atmospheric marathon that attracts runners from all over the world every year to Portugal’s beautiful capital, Lisbon. The race is particularly renowned for its spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus, where runners can experience a unique combination of coastal scenery and urban surroundings.

The race starts in the coastal town of Cascais, just outside Lisbon, and then follows one of Europe’s most scenic marathon routes along the coast and the river towards the city centre. Along the way, runners pass iconic landmarks such as Belém with its historic monuments and continue along the waterfront with views of the impressive Ponte 25 de Abril bridge before crossing the finish line.
The Lisbon Marathon is one of Portugal’s biggest running events and is usually held in October, when the weather offers mild temperatures and pleasant running conditions. This makes the race attractive to both elite runners and amateur runners who want to end the season on a high note.

The course is relatively flat and fast, particularly along the long stretch of coastline, which offers good opportunities to achieve a personal best. At the same time, wind conditions from the sea may play a role and present an extra challenge for the participants.
The organisation runs smoothly, with clearly marked refreshment stations and well-organised logistics along the entire course. Support from the spectators is slightly more concentrated in the central sections of the race, but the atmosphere is warm and encouraging, particularly as the runners approach the finish line.
The Lisbon Marathon is ideal for both runners looking to set personal bests and those who want to combine a marathon experience with beautiful scenery and a unique run along the Atlantic coast.
