Rome Marathon
Join us in the Eternal City! The Rome Marathon is a historic and atmospheric 42km race that takes you through thousands of years of culture and architecture, from the mighty Colosseum and Roman Forum to the magnificent St Peter’s Basilica and the winding banks of the Tiber. A unique marathon that attracts both elite runners and passionate walkers from all over the world.
We live near the start and finish at the Colusseum, making it easy to focus on the race without having to worry about logistics.
We also offer a smooth and comfortable transfer to the bib fair and offer service meetings to prepare you for the race.
The Rome Marathon offers a flat course with a height difference of about 20 metres (lowest elevation 10 m above sea level – highest elevation 30 m above sea level) and includes approximately 6 km of cobblestones.
The course passes some of Rome’s most famous and beautiful sites: the start and finish area is at the Colosseum and then passes the Fori Imperiali Arco di Costantino, Circo Massimo, St Peter’s Basilica, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and the steps of the Capitol, among others.

Rome – a city where history meets everyday life
Rome is a destination where thousands of years of history live side by side with a vibrant contemporary city life. The city is equally suited to first-time visitors and those who want to return and discover new neighbourhoods at a slower pace.

Rome offers a multifaceted experience where ancient ruins, Renaissance palaces and everyday neighbourhoods blend together. Along narrow streets and open squares, historic monuments, cafés and small shops meet, and each neighbourhood has its own character. It’s easy to intersperse well-known sights with spontaneous breaks for food, walking or people-watching.
As a destination, Rome is suitable for both a short city break and a longer stay. Distances are manageable, public transport is well developed and there is a wide range of accommodation. Whether your focus is on history, culture, food or just taking in the city’s atmosphere, Rome is a city that invites you to experience it at your own pace.
About the race
The Rome Marathon is a magnificent marathon race that attracts 20 000 – 30 000 runners from all over the world every year. The race winds its way through the heart of Rome, with participants starting on Via dei Fori Imperiali in the shadow of the Colosseum and getting a unique chance to run among some of the city’s most iconic sites.

The race passes historic landmarks such as Piazza Venezia, Circus Maximus, the ancient Pyramid of Cestius and the imposing Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura before reaching one of the most devotional parts of the course – Via della Conciliazione towards the majestic dome of St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Along the Tiber, beautiful views are offered, and the race continues through classical neighbourhoods past Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and the world-famous Trevi Fountain. The finish line is then in Circo Massimo, where runners end their adventure in one of the greatest arenas of antiquity with the Colosseum as a backdrop again.
The Rome Marathon is one of Europe’s most impressive urban and cultural marathons, where history literally surrounds you throughout the race. The course is mostly flat but also includes sections of classic Roman cobblestones, providing both a physical and visual challenge. The race is organised in March when Rome’s early spring offers cool mornings and pleasant temperatures, making it a popular time to tackle both personal goals and sightseeing in one.
