The Big Half is a crowd-pleaser like no other, offering a fast and inspiring course through some of the city’s most iconic settings. Starting at the mighty Tower Bridge, the race takes you through East London’s vibrant neighbourhoods, along the banks of the Thames and to the finish line in front of the Cutty Sark in Greenwich – one of the capital’s most iconic finishes.

With tens of thousands of runners on the start line and a fantastic crowd all along the course, The Big Half is the perfect combination of running fun, atmosphere and sights. It brings together elite and amateur runners in an inclusive race that celebrates diversity, community and running at its best.

Number plate distribution / Expo

Your starter pack will be collected from Marathon House, 190 Great Dover Street, London, during the following times:

12.00-15.00 and 16.00-19.00 on Friday 5 September
10.00-14.00 and 15.00-18.00 on Saturday 6 September

Take-off and transport

We are located near and conveniently start at Tower Bridge in London, about 13 minutes walking distance from the hotel.

There is bag drop at the start. You can wear an extra shirt before the start and leave it in a container. These are later collected and donated to charity.

Between 08:30-10:00 there are various Start Waves, so some waiting may occur.

Clothes drop-off

It is possible to leave a kit bag in the start area. Please use only the clear kit bag and attached label provided in your event pack. Remember to dress in a layer of warm clothing that can be discarded at the start line.

Starting area and track

The start area is located in and around Tower Bridge, and there are two assembly areas: North and South.
You will receive an email confirming which start area you have been allocated to, but here is a quick reminder for race day:
If your bib number starts with “N”, go to the North Assembly Area
If your start number begins with “S”, go to the South Assembly Area

The route is relatively flat and fast, starting at Tower Bridge and travelling through East London via Canary Wharf and elsewhere, before finishing at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich.

The temperature in September ranges from 12 to 16 degrees.

Hydration and energy during the race

There are hydration stations along the course where you can get water and sports drinks. Usually there are stations at about mile 3, 6, 8, 10 and at the finish line after the race.

Toilets and medical assistance are available along the track.

The objective

Water and sports drinks will be handed out directly at the finish area, followed by simple recovery snacks.

If you have chosen that you want a medal and finisher t-shirt, you will pick this up after the finish. NOTE! This choice is made at registration and cannot be changed on site.

From the finish area it is about 7 km back to the hotel. You can take the train from Greenwich, Maze Hill or Deptford Please.

With millions of inhabitants and a rich cultural life, London is a city full of energy, contrasts and character. It blends tradition and innovation in a way that makes every visit unique.

About the race

Running the Big Half is more than covering 21.1 kilometres – it’s experiencing London first-hand, right in the heart of the city’s vibrant life. When the starting gun goes off at Tower Bridge and you make your way across the closed-off street with the Thames sparkling beside you, it feels like the whole city opens up. The cheers of the crowd follow you through the neighbourhoods of East London, creating an energy that carries you forward step by step.

The course is fast and inviting, but above all, full of character. You’ll run through modern Canary Wharf, along wide city streets and on to historic Greenwich. The contrasts are clear – old meets new, glass facades reflect centuries of history – and each part of the race has its own atmosphere. As you approach the finish line at the Cutty Sark and see the classic sailing ship rise up in front of you, there’s that special feeling: you’re part of something bigger than just a race.

The Big Half is as much about community as it is about performance. It brings together elite and amateur runners, Londoners and international guests, all driven by the same rhythm through the city streets. Whether the goal is a personal best or savouring the experience all the way to the finish line, this is a half marathon that combines the pulse of the city with the joy of running – and leaves you with the memory of London in every step.
